Like the United States, Great Britain is divided on the critical issues of immigration, identity, culture, and class. British journalist David Goodhart addresses the great 鈥渧alues divide鈥� in his new book, The Road to Somewhere: The Populist Revolt and the Future of Politics. Goodhart asserts that British society is divided between a cosmopolitan liberal group, the Anywheres, and a much larger, but less influential group he calls the Somewheres. The Anywheres place a high value on autonomy and mobility, while the Somewheres value family and nation. Goodhart asserts that this 鈥渧alues divide鈥� helps to explain Brexit and makes the case for engagement with the 鈥渄ecent populists鈥� in the Somewhere community.
On June 30th, 华体会 Distinguished Fellow Walter Russell Mead and Senior Fellow John Fonte conducted a discussion with David Goodhart on his new book and the future of Brexit and British values.
