In 2009, Turkey鈥檚 then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan likened China鈥檚 brutal treatment of the Uyghur population to an act of 鈥済enocide.鈥� Yet as China鈥檚 persecution of the Uyghurs has escalated, President Erdogan鈥檚 government and the media it controls have become conspicuously silent. What accounts for this stark reversal in Turkey鈥檚 stance? Opposition to China鈥檚 genocidal policies and the Erdogan regime has been growing inside Turkey among nationalist and Islamic groups.
