The apparent lack of any contingency planning for the swift fall of Kabul to the Taliban has left the United States with perhaps the worst foreign policy crisis of the post-Cold war era. With more than 10,000 Americans thought to be left behind enemy lines (as well as thousands of Afghan allies to whom the U.S. has promised assistance), the Taliban could potentially hold thousands of our own citizens hostage and pursue a campaign of retribution against Afghans who have helped the United States.
